Heavy Ion Physics at Lhc
نویسنده
چکیده
The study of heavy ion interactions constitutes an important part of the experimental program outlined for the Large Hadron Collider under construction at CERN and expected to be operational by 2006. ALICE 1 is the single detector having the capabilities to explore at the same time most of the characteristics of high energy heavy ion interactions. Specific studies of jet quenching and quarkonia production, essentially related to μ detection are also planned by CMS .

The Heavy Ion Physics Program with ATLAS at the LHC
The first Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at √ sNN = 5.52 TeV are imminent. Heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide an extended energy lever arm to the existing measurements made at RHIC and SPS, especially in hard (large-Q) processes. In this contribution an overview of the ATLAS detector is given and the current physics focus of Heavy Ion Working Group is discussed.
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC
The heavy-ion program at the LHC will be pursued by three experiments including ATLAS, a multipurpose detector to study p+p collisions. A report on the potential of the ATLAS detector to uncover new physics in Pb+Pb collisions at energies thirty times larger than energy available at RHIC is presented. Key aspects of the heavy-ion program of the ATLAS experiment, with the emphasis on extending m...
متن کاملJet Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions with Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the LHC
The status of CMS jet simulations and physics analysis in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet reconstruction and high-pT particle tracking in the high multiplicity environment of heavy ion collisions at the LHC using the CMS calorimetry and tracking system are described. The Monte Carlo tools used to simulate jet quenching are discussed.
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with CMS at LHC
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) plans to operate as a heavy ion collider for one month each year starting in 2007. LHC will be capable of accelerating a variety of ions up to beam energies of 7 TeV/charge. The design, peak and three-hour-fill-averaged luminosities are presented in Table 1 along with the maximum center of mass energy[1]. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) [2] experiment is a genera...
متن کاملPredictions for the LHC heavy ion programme
Apparently universal trends have been observed in relativistic nucleusnucleus collisions up to RHIC energies. Here, we review these trends and we discuss their agnostic extrapolation to heavy ion collisions at the LHC. PACS numbers: 12.38.Mh, 25.75.Nq Invited topical review for J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. متن کاملHeavy Ions at LHC: Theoretical Issues
We give a brief overview of our current theoretical understanding of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision and the properties of super-hot nuclear matter. We focus on several issues that have been discussed in connection with experimental results from the CERN SPS and from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC. We give an extrapolation of our current knowledge to LHC energies and ask which p...
